A woman in her fifties was killed in the fire in her apartment, this Saturday noon in Saint-Martin-de-Ré, in the residence “Les Remparts” located a stone’s throw from the port confirms the mayor Patrice Dechelette. “She did not manage to get out of her apartment in time,” he told France Bleu La Rochelle despite “the rapid arrival of the firefighters”. A neighbor sounded the alarm.
The lady was alone in her apartment and lived year-round in a residence “over 90% occupied by secondary residents”. The fire and rescue service SDIS 17 reports two people taken care of.
The fire severely damaged the apartment according to the mayor, but the firefighters managed to preserve the rest of the one-story residence. They had to deploy the large ladder, and attack the flames with a spear to extinguish the disaster. An investigation is open, it is not known what could have caused this fire.
