If the latest census from Statistics Canada, indicating the fact that less than 50% of Montrealers speak French first at home, does not catalyze a national awakening, nothing will. It is necessary to mention that the present version of C-13 at the federal level has not put an end to the pernicious decline of the French language. Therefore, federally chartered businesses must be subject to Quebec’s Charter of the French language. Liberals do it!
Moreover, as PQ leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon indicated during the last election campaign, the fact that French is still the majority in Quebec, after so many years under an assimilating British regime, is already remarkable in itself.
My only wish for our nation in 2023: that our governments take structural measures to ensure not only the vitality of Molière’s language, but also its survival in Canada, a post-national country where the concept of bilingualism is only one illusory and deceptive facade. I wish everyone and the Quebec nation that 2023 will be a prosperous year.
