a wild boar in the middle of the Neudorf district, the SPA prevents hunters from killing him

A wild boar wandered through the Strasbourg district of Neudorf, this Sunday, December 5. Several people, including members of the SPA of Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin), intervened so that he was not harmed.

After the chamois in Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin), place au sanglier in Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin). It is indeed an unusual scene that took place in the Neudorf district, this Sunday, December 5, 2021.

A wild boar began to wander in the rue de l’Elbe, at the stroke of 3 pm. His presence was immediately noticed, bringing many curious and curious on the spot. He was even filmed.

In order to avoid any untoward incident, the boar was surrounded by security barriers. Members of the Strasbourg Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) also opposed hunters who wanted to kill him. No shots were therefore fired in the Danube eco-district, between the Esplanade and Rivétoiles (see on the map below).

France 3 Alsace joined Catherine Bronner, employee of the SPA of Strasbourg (the clarification is made because this local association is independent of the national SPA). “This wild boar got lost. At 6.30 p.m., it was still there. We are waiting for the firefighters to be able to anesthetize it. And then … we don’t know yet.”

The municipal police are present on site, as well as the firefighters. But this brigade can do nothing, not being authorized to intervene in this type of case. The Molsheim brigade (Bas-Rhin), which has the necessary techniques and equipment, was therefore called in as reinforcements.

“The municipal councilor for animals in the city, Marie-Françoise Hamard, is present: she supports us.” Support, they needed it. “There were wolf-man officers: hunters. They wanted to shoot him down, but we were able to stop them.” A situation that recalls that of a deer taking refuge in the Chantilly station (Oise), at the beginning of 2021. The vice-president of the SPA, Cindy The Diberder, and the director of the shelter, Maeva Fabbri, made sure there was no drama.

To cut him down would undoubtedly have been disproportionate. “A boar doesn’t charge like that… It wasn’t a big male, or a female defending its young. And that’s not its territory.” So he wasn’t going to defend him aggressively, even though people had common sense not to get too close to him. “He was rather quite distraught”, to be honest.

Present at the Strasbourg SPA since the 1990s, Catherine Bronner cannot explain the presence of this wild boar in the middle of buildings. “Maybe he got lost? I have no idea. There are sometimes foxes in town, but I had never heard of a wild boar before.” It recalls the proximity of the Neuhof forest.
