a whale spotted in the creek of En Vau

A patrol of agents from the Calanques National Park in Marseille observed a fin whale on the lookout for food in the Calanque d’En Vau.

An unexpected visitor in Marseille waters. Calanques National Park agents spotted a whale near the coast. Rare images shared on the institution’s Twitter account, this Friday, April 21.

“During a patrol at sea at the end of March, the agents of the National Park observed a fin whale moving very close to the creek of En-Vau!”, explains the park. The observation of this giant of the seas (second largest mammal in the world) so close to our coasts is rare”.

The cetacean seemed neither stressed nor disoriented.

The traffic at sea, which was particularly calm that day, made it possible to observe the animal for nearly 90 minutes. The cetacean did not seem stressed, nor disoriented, explains the park. Its movements, near several no-take zones and the Cassidaigne underwater canyon, were certainly related to the search for food.

The park reminds that if you are lucky enough to observe cetaceans at sea, it is forbidden to approach them within 100m so as not to disturb the animals.
