The franceinfo Talk looks at the resumption of fighting between Israel and Hamas, after the one-week truce. Sarah Calamand receives Joan Deas, executive director of iReMMo, Guillaume Ancel, former French officer and author of the blog “Ne pas Subir” and Jean-François Corty, vice-president of Médecins du Monde and associate researcher at IRIS.
49 days after the start of the conflict, the inhabitants of Gaza wake up without the sound of bombing, sirens, planes and drones. Concluded between Hamas and Israel, the truce began Friday, November 24particularly with a view to sending as much food and medicine as possible.
However, if the humanitarian associations and NGOs insist that a ceasefire is necessary rather than a truce, the Fighting resumed Friday, December 1 in the morning. Frédéric Joli, spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross, declares that this resumption is “the worst news”.
A truce marked by the release of hostages in the hands of Hamas
Negotiated under the auspices of Qatarthe agreement between Israel and Hamas also provides for the release of some of the hostages Israelis, in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners. Friday November 24, thirteen first hostages were released by Hamas: four children, six women aged over 70 as well as two Thai citizens and a Filipino citizen. The agreement reached also allowed the release of 39 Palestinian prisoners on this date.
In one week of truce, a total of 110 Israeli and foreign hostages released, according to a count made on the evening of Thursday, November 30. This represents more than 45% of the 240 people kidnapped by Hamas and sequestered in Gaza. The truce ultimately allowed the release of 86 Israelis and 24 foreigners or dual nationals. Among these, there are four Franco-Israelis.
According to the October 7 collective, 130 hostages have yet to be released, including two babies. “We hope that French diplomacy will work to obtain the release” hostages, “they are asked to weigh as much as possible”, declared the co-founder of the collective, Jean-David Ichay.
Under the terms of the agreement between Hamas and Israel, the number of Palestinian prisoners released is three times larger than the 80 Israelis released. There are 240 Palestinian prisoners released.
