Since the morning of Saturday January 13, 19 million Taiwanese voters have been called to the polls to choose their new president. In the polling stations, the first voters are well aware of what is at stake. “The government has turned into a big group of fraudsters. We should put them out of business.”confides a man. “I hope that we will remain a country of freedom and democracy”adds a woman.
The issue of the island’s independence
The vote is crucial, as the shadow of China becomes more threatening than ever on the Taiwanese archipelago, and its influence was at the heart of the campaign led by the three main candidates. 90% of Taiwanese today say they are opposed to Chinese annexation. Another issue of the election, the appointment of the 113 deputies of Parliament, where the ruling party, supporter of the independence of the island, could lose its majority.
