Residents of Grindavik, a town in southwest Iceland located near a volcano, were evacuated as a precaution in early November. The eruption, which began Monday, December 18, is harmless.

In Iceland, on Monday December 18, at around 10 p.m., a volcano erupted in the southwest of the country. Lava then began to flow from a fissure which continues to grow and is nearly four kilometers long. This eruption is spectacular, but local police say that the population is not in danger in the current state of the eruption. This had been expected for weeks.

Warning earthquakes

In Grindavik (Iceland), a small village located near the volcano, the 4,000 inhabitants were evacuated as a precaution at the beginning of November. Several earthquakes had distorted the roads and cut the village in two. Residents had been allowed to return home within time slots. Until March 2021, the Reykjanes Peninsula had been spared from eruptions for almost eight centuries.
