In the United Kingdom, a video watched by millions of people is causing controversy. And which shakes up the end of the year for Boris Johnson, who must have displayed his anger. The spokesperson for 10 Downing Street had to resign.
The devastating video released this week is from December 22, 2020. Without knowing it was being recorded, Boris Johnson’s spokesperson laughs with colleagues at a party four days earlier in the Prime Minister’s offices, as the rallies gather are banned nationwide. “This imaginary party was a professional meeting and there was no distancing,” said ex-spokesperson Allegra Statton.
Party or business meeting at 10 Downing Street, the scandal is resounding and the spokesperson, in tears, resigns: “I will regret this all my life.” Boris Johnson also had to apologize. His country is one of the most bereaved in Europe by the pandemic. In front of Parliament, however, he refuses to confirm the holding of an illegal party. He was not a priori part of the forty or so guests. “Do what I say, not what I do”, laughs The Sun, symbol of a raging English press. Before the scandal, the Conservatives were ahead of Labor in the polls, it is now the other way around.
