Residents of the Camargue (Bouches-du-Rhône) and environmental associations are standing up against a very high voltage line project. They promise to launch numerous legal challenges if they are not heard.
A line is creating tensions in the Camargue. On Monday, May 6, more than 300 people gathered to denounce the creation of a very high voltage overhead line of more than 400,000 volts between Gard and Bouches-du-Rhône. The objective of the project, supported by the electric transport network and the State, is to decarbonize the Fos-sur-Mer site (Bouches-du-Rhône), near Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), the one of the most polluting in France.
An economic argument
For environmental defense associations, this line poses ecological problems. It must cross 65 kilometers of land, including numerous protected natural areas. Critics also make the economic argument. While understanding the anger of local residents, the project leaders believe that the construction of the infrastructure is essential, particularly on the industrial level. Opponents promise to launch numerous legal appeals if they are not heard.
