A border crossing between Canada and the United States has been closed after a vehicle exploded at a checkpoint on a bridge near Niagara Falls.

The FBI office in Buffalo said in a statement that it was investigating an explosion on the Rainbow Bridge, which connects the two countries across the Niagara River.

Photos and videos taken by news outlets and posted on social media showed a security booth engulfed in flames.

There were no further details immediately.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she had been informed of the incident and was “monitoring the situation closely.”

On the Canadian side, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was briefed on the situation by his national security and intelligence advisor, his office said in a statement.

“We are in contact with the American authorities. The Minister of Public Safety, the RCMP [Gendarmerie royale du Canada] and the CBSA [Agence des services frontaliers du Canada] are fully engaged and providing all the necessary support,” he added.

The Rainbow Bridge is one of four border crossings connecting Ontario and Western New York.

The others are Lewiston, Whirlpool and Peace Bridge. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission reports that all four crossings are closed.
