“A valve can be used to be more accessible, more educational”

Launched in July 2020 by actress Marine Baousson, the “Vulgar” podcast, a mixture of humor and educational explanations, quickly gained great popularity, to the point of now totaling more than 2.5 million listeners, and ‘have received not one but two prizes: that of “podcast of the year” awarded by the giant Apple, but also the Radio France Prize for podcast revelation at the Paris Podcast Festival 2020. Marine Baousson looks back on the birth of this podcast : “I had the idea a very long time ago. I thought I had a lot of general knowledge, but the older I got, the more I encountered conversations with people who really did. I realize that often I don’t quite understand what I’m being told. “

“I had this idea to do popularization and I never found the time. And then there was this wonderful thing of containment. Everything stopped for me in my job. After I had done everything. cleaning, I said to myself: well, we have to get started. And so I made this podcast. “

so here’s Vulgar, the book, now, subtitled: “Popularization of stuff by someone who knows nothing”. With a concept that remains the same: explaining what represents known words that we often say or hear, but without knowing what is behind it. What can more easily shine in society: “I do research on the Internet, explains Marine Baousson, I dig through books, watch lots of documentaries and then explain what I understand. Maybe I misunderstood and then I get messages from people telling me that I was wrong. And I agree because I have no ego that I would know better than others. ” With the risk that the valve will be retained rather than the explanation: “That’s fine with me. Besides, I remember the valves more often than the real explanation. That’s how I know the spleen is the body’s Brita coffee maker because it’s a filter. Now it’s got into my head and I know it. And I think the valve can be used to be more accessible, more educational. “

Evil tongues might say to themselves that after all, a book would only be a transcription of the podcast to be able to earn money without straining too much by surfing on its success. Except that not completely, says Marine Baousson. “I immediately said to myself that it would be a great book and my dream is for there to be lots of them, lots of colors. It’s an adaptation of the podcast and I’ve written 140, podcasts. There are twenty subjects in the book there and I could do a lot more. There are people, for example my sister-in-law, for whom in writing, it is much clearer. “

The object is also successful thanks to the work of the graphic designer Juliette Poney: “Juliette has a crazy talent and I’m lucky because she’s been with me for a very long time. She was the one who did all the thumbnails of the podcast. I said: I only do the book if Juliette is there. Juliette’s work brings life. ” Finally, “Vulgar” will also soon be a show: “Basically, I’m a comedian. It’s a show where people will choose the themes and I prepare a whole bunch of them. We will be two on stage with my little brother, Romain Baousson, we will explain things. to the people who will choose the subjects. “

Vulgar, popularization of things by someone who knows nothing about it, by Marine Baousson and Juliette Poney (Flammarion). And “Vulgar”, the podcast, on podcast platforms.
