Before wild birds migrate, 64 million farmed ducks will be vaccinated against avian flu. This campaign is a relief for producers.
HAS Buanes (Landes)ducklings receive their first dose of avian flu vaccine. It’s a race against the watch which begins in France. 64 million web-footed birds must be protected before the arrival of migrations of wild birds, carrying the virus. For a breeder from Landes, this vaccination means the end of a nightmare. Because of the epidemic, for three consecutive years, he had to cull all his ducks to create a crawl space.
The same strategy as for Covid
“It’s very traumatic. There, vaccination is the great hope. It’s a great relief for us producers to be able to protect our animals.”assures Jean-Pierre Dubrocaa duck producer. Two doses are required. The State finances 85% vaccination with the same strategy as that used during Covid-19. “It’s exactly the same thing. By vaccinating a batch of ducks, we will prevent not the introduction of the virus into this batch, but its possible spread.explains François Landais, veterinarian.
These vaccines were authorized after it was proven that they have no adverse effects on humans. But some countries, such as Japan, still ban imports resulting from vaccinations.
