As firefights continue between Israelis and Palestinians, Egypt has offered a truce, starting the night of August 7-8. If Israel would have agreed, Islamic Jihad has yet to respond.

Live from Jerusalem, Lucas de Villepin takes stock of the situation between Israel and Gaza, while a truce is hoped for. “A ceasefire is supposed to come into effect overnight. It is Egypt, the mediator in this crisis, which affirms it. Israel would have accepted the terms of this truce. No response, however, from the side of Islamic Jihad, which notably demands the release of one of its leaders detained in one of the jails of the Hebrew State.“, he explains.

For the moment, the firing of rockets by Islamic Jihad into Israel continues, as do the strikes by the Israeli air force in the Gaza Strip. “But if this truce holds, the Jewish state would have achieved its objectives. Indeed, there have been targeted killings in the Gaza Strip. There have also been waves of arrests in the West Bank. On the other hand, on the Palestinian side, the human toll, which is still provisional, is heavy: at least 41 dead. Members of the Islamic Jihad but also civilians and at least six children“, concludes Lucas de Villepin.
