First recognized as a screenwriter thanks to his collaborations with Philippe Lioret (miss, Welcome), Emmanuel Courcol proposes, five years later Cease fire, a second feature film as a director. The story ofA triumph is inspired by a real story that took place in Sweden in the 1980s, which highlights virtues which, obviously, seduced the man of the theater who is also Emmanuel Courcol.
Without a doubt, Kad Merad (Welcome to the Ch’tis, series Black baron) finds one of his most beautiful roles by slipping into the shoes of an unemployed actor who, reluctantly, agrees to lead a play workshop in a prison. The interest of this dramatic comedy also lies in this way of leading the viewer into a story that is less predictable than it seems at first glance.
Of course, there is this meeting between an actor who, at the beginning, expects absolutely nothing from the mandate entrusted to him, with inmates who, for their part, do not really want to recite La Fontaine’s fables either. . Then, the discovery, in some of them, of a talent of which they are not aware. Then rediscover with them the purity of the game and a new vocation as a director. Break institutional rules and take these defeated beings as far as possible. Take revenge on life in the process. To be finally carried by the intoxication of the applause, the success.
However, the “triumph” announced by the title takes on its full meaning in the last act of the feature film, in a completely unexpected way. Like a surprising integration of the spirit of the theater into the reality of our lives.
