A trial required against the former Minister of Justice Michèle Alliot-Marie for illegal taking of interests

A judicial investigation opened in 2013 in Nanterre identified subsidies paid by the town hall of Saint-Jean-de-Luz to an association, chaired at the time by his father.

Like the current Minister of Justice Eric Dupond-Moretti, Michèle Alliot-Marie is heading towards a trial for illegal taking of interests. The Nanterre public prosecutor’s office requires a judgment before the criminal court for the former Minister of Justice, in the context of the case of subsidies paid between 2009 and 2013 for the benefit of an association in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, we have learned AFP, Thursday October 26, with the public prosecutor. This association was chaired by her father Bernard Marie (since deceased) when she was deputy mayor of the city.

A judicial investigation opened in 2013 in Nanterre, targeting Bernard Marie, former deputy mayor of Biarritz, and his daughter, had identified these subsidies paid by the town hall of Saint-Jean-de-Luz to an association, the Fondation duvoluntaire, by through the city’s tourist office. The essential role of this association is the organization of the Saint-Jean-de-Luz Young Directors Festival.

According to information collected during the investigation, each year, the association receives 25,000 euros from the town hall. However, between 2009 and 2013, the date of the last edition of this festival, Michèle Alliot-Marie was deputy mayor, in addition to her duties as Keeper of the Seals and then Minister of Foreign Affairs. The former minister, now aged 77, “did not participate in any vote having as its object the payment of a subsidy to the association chaired by his father, neither directly nor indirectly”his lawyers reacted to AFP. “We will have no difficulty in demonstrating the innocence of Ms. Alliot-Marie,” they assert.
