Like the current Minister of Justice Eric Dupond-Moretti, Michèle Alliot-Marie is heading towards a trial for illegal taking of interests. The Nanterre public prosecutor’s office requires a judgment before the criminal court for the former Minister of Justice (June 2009-November 2010), in the context of the case of subsidies paid between 2009 and 2013 for the benefit of an association in Saint-Jean -de-Luz (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), AFP learned on Thursday October 26 from the public prosecutor. This organization was chaired by her father, Bernard Marie (died in 2015), when she was deputy mayor of the city.
A judicial investigation opened in 2013 in Nanterre, targeting Bernard Marie, former deputy mayor of Biarritz, and his daughter, identified these subsidies paid by the town hall of Saint-Jean-de-Luz to the Volunteer Foundation, through the city’s tourist office. The essential role of this association is the organization of the Saint-Jean-de-Luz Young Directors Festival.
According to information collected during the investigation, each year, the association receives 25,000 euros from the town hall. However, between 2009 and 2013, the date of the last edition of this festival, Michèle Alliot-Marie was deputy mayor, in addition to her duties as Keeper of the Seals and then Minister of Foreign Affairs (November 2010-February 2011).
The former minister, now aged 77, “did not participate in any vote having as its object the payment of a subsidy to the association chaired by his father, neither directly nor indirectly”his lawyers reacted to AFP. “We will have no difficulty in demonstrating the innocence of Ms. Alliot-Marie,” they assert.
