A trade between Erik Karlsson and William Nylander to come?

Rumors are swirling about San Jose Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson, and the latest involves Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander.

Toronto journalist Howard Berger said Wednesday that the name of the player before him had been mentioned in a proposed transaction that would allow the Queen City club to get their hands on the most recent winner of the James Norris Trophy.

It’s no secret that Karlsson wants to get a fresh start with a team that aspires to top honors and the Sharks are ready to give it to him.

As for Nylander, the 27-year-old Swede will sign a six-year, $6 million annual deal in 2023-24. It seems that negotiations for a contract extension would hang with the new management of the Leafs.

The winger is coming off his career-best statistical season, scoring 40 goals and 47 assists for 87 points in 82 games.

Karlsson also set a new personal high in 2022-23. The 33-year-old veteran hit the target 25 times and provided 76 assists for 101 points in 82 games. The full-back holds a contract worth $11.5 million a year which is valid until the conclusion of the 2026-2027 campaign.
