A total of 94 women were killed by their spouse or ex-spouse in 2023, the chancellery announced on Tuesday, January 2, confirming information from the Figaro. This is a non-definitive assessment. Last year, 113 femicides were recorded, during a provisional assessment, before it was finally revised upwards (118).

This development is “very far from being satisfactory[e]however commented the Minister of Justice, Eric Dupond-Moretti, quoted by the daily. “We know that fighting this scourge takes time (…) but the commitment of French justice to stem feminicides is still bearing its first fruits”he added. “We can hope that our fight will be even more effective” with the deployment of “serious danger phones” and of “anti-reconciliation bracelets” additional, also underlined the minister.

Centers specializing in domestic violence

Since Monday January 1, each of the 164 French courts and 36 courts of appeal have had a division specializing in domestic violence. Under the responsibility of “coordinating magistrates” Specially trained, these centers aim to promote coordinated action and better sharing of information between all magistrates and stakeholders concerned by the same family situation.
