A third referendum Sunday, December 12 in New Caledonia to vote on self-determination. The separatists had narrowly lost in 2020. This time they call for a boycott of the ballot which takes place in the midst of a health crisis.
The referendum of Sunday, December 12 on self-determination in New Caledonia is in everyone’s mind, but it remains a taboo subject, as in this agricultural enterprise two hours from Noumea. Guy Michel, the manager of the operation, believes for his part that New Caledonia could not get by without France.
China is closely monitoring the archipelago’s nickel reserves, yet caught in a delicate economic situation: since the pandemic, tourist boats no longer stop there. Added to this are the effects of successive referendums, which have scared some investors and residents. “We find ourselves with the Caledonian economic world which is afraid to invest, wonders about his life and his life project in New Caledonia”, specifies David Guyenne, president of the Chamber of Commerce. Indeed, the priority of New Caledonian entrepreneurs seems to be turned towards another horizon: the digital and ecological transition.
