a teenager tries to commit suicide in his college, denouncing verbal abuse by a professor

Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against the professor by the Versailles Academy after the suicide attempt of a 13-year-old schoolboy two weeks ago. On June 7, this teenager, educated in a boys’ college in Saint-Cloud, a private Catholic establishment under contract with the State, tried to jump out of the window at the end of a lesson.

Kicked out of class for being “dissipated“, the student claims to have been insulted for the first time by this math teacher. He then returned to the classroom at the end of the lesson to pick up his things. There, the teacher insulted him again, according to the mother of the boy, with remarks “very humiliating, mentally insane, stupid”. He then walks towards the window”to do the irreparable“, says his mother to franceinfo. “Fortunately, two of his buddies immediately went to him and begged him not to make this gesture, when he had already started to step over the window. A teacher also intervened to calm him down. During all this time, the teacher was in the class and did not react“, says the mother of the family.

The teenager assures that relations have been strained with the teacher for several months. His mother says that “every day”his son comes home saying “It’s gone all over the place, the teacher got angry”a situation she describes as coming back “permanently”. She is angry with the teacher and denounces the lack of support from the establishment, which let her child go alone after his suicide attempt.

She was not notified by the college until the following evening. To franceinfo, she confides that it was only the evening of the event that she understood that something had happened in class: “I had no alert, no one gave me information on this serious fact. It is by seeing the notifications on my phone, of a discussion of the parents on a WhatsApp group, that I have the information on a serious event which took place in the class. I read, I don’t react, and I wait for my son’s version. In tears, he explains to me, in rage, that during math class, the teacher took him up and insulted him, before he tried to get out of the window.“, details the mother. A version which corroborates with the version told by the parents on the messaging system, she assures.

The teenager’s mother filed a complaint, as did the family of another child. The academy had been seized, at the end of March, by a family concerning repeated exclusions of a student and abusive words. The director of the college indicated, during April, to have received the teacher as a reminder of the obligations and to have organized a mediation with the family.

An investigation is opened. The Versailles Academy has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the teacher and claims to have informed the diocesan management of Hauts-de-Seine, on which the college depends, of the alleged facts so that it can strictly analyze the functioning of the management of the establishment. The academic services also specify that they support the student and his family who are considering a change of establishment with a return to public education.
