A 65-year-old teacher suffered upper body injuries after being attacked in the middle of class by a 13-year-old student on Thursday afternoon in a Laval school.
The event occurred shortly after dinner at the Odyssée-des-Jeunes school, according to information from the spokesperson for the Police Department of the City of Laval (SPL) Érika Landry.
The teacher allegedly asked the student to change her behavior, after which the young girl allegedly attacked her. Some students reported that the attack was carried out with scissors, but this information was not confirmed by the police, said Sergeant Landry.
The surrounding students tried to intervene, and the teaching staff were finally able to control the teenager.
The teacher was taken to hospital for treatment of upper body injuries and possible nervous shock, according to the police spokeswoman. The girl was also taken to the hospital to undergo a psychological evaluation.
In the evening, the young suspect was arrested by the police for armed assault, and she was released by summons. She is therefore no longer detained pending the possible filing of charges.
The file will soon be sent to prosecutors, said Sergeant Landry.
Minor injuries
The Laval School Service Center confirmed in an email that an “incident” had occurred at the school due to a student “who became disorganized and physically attacked his teacher.”
The latter suffered minor injuries and remained at home Friday, said Annie Goyette, spokesperson for the service center. As for the student, she has been removed from the class for now, pending the next steps in the case.
“Rest assured that we do not tolerate acts of violence, that they are unacceptable and that we take the situation very seriously,” said Mr.me Goyette, who provided The Canadian Press with a letter sent to parents on Thursday.
In this missive, the school director, Geoffroy Gauthier, announces the event that occurred in the second secondary art class. He told parents that resources will be available for students who would like to open up about the incident.
