A swerve kills one in Montreal

Alcohol and speed could be involved in a swerve that left one dead and one injured Saturday morning in Montreal.

The accident occurred around 6:20 a.m. when the driver of a vehicle traveling on boulevard Pie IX lost control near the intersection of rue de Charleroi, in the Montréal-Nord borough.

The driver of the vehicle, which was traveling in a northerly direction, first found himself on the central reservation before finally ending up against a lamp post.

“The two people who were on board at the time of the accident suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospital,” said Constable Mariane Allaire Morin, spokesperson for the City of Montreal (SPVM), Saturday morning.

The passenger, a 34-year-old man, succumbed to his injuries, said officer Gabriella Youakim in the afternoon.

The driver, a 33-year-old man, was in stable condition.

Boulevard Pie IX was closed in both directions between Boulevard Henri-Bourrassa and Rue de Charleroi, and the scene was protected to allow investigators to do their job.

In the afternoon, the boulevard was reopened to traffic, but the investigation continued. Officer Allaire Morin reported that “alcohol and speed could be involved in this event”.
