A suspicious envelope sent to the office of Simon Jolin-Barrette

An envelope containing an unknown substance was sent to the constituency office of Justice Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette on Thursday morning.

The staff of the county office located in Beloeil, in Montérégie, intercepted correspondence by mail around 11 a.m.

It was an envelope with an unknown substance inside.

“As required by security procedure, we contacted the emergency services and evacuated the building. The emergency services are currently on site and are continuing their checks,” said Élisabeth Gosselin, the minister’s press attaché.

A dozen firefighters and a few vehicles from the Richelieu–Saint-Laurent intermunicipal police board were on site as the The Press. No poisoning has been reported.

According to Captain Sébastien Guillemette, the file was transferred to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).
