The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) confirms that a 53-year-old man was arrested in connection with the shooting that occurred Friday in Estérel. Valeriy Tarasenko, a 44-year-old man with a troubled past, was injured and taken to hospital.
The assault took place near the vast Estérel Resort hotel complex. The victim was first transported by car from the parking lot of the hotel where she was, and returned on foot, injured, a few minutes later, according to videos from surveillance cameras.
Mr. Tarasenko is an entrepreneur, who, according to some social media accounts that bear his name, is a Russian national. A charitable organization in his name is still registered in the Quebec enterprise register.
He was a business partner of Inna Yashchyshy, a young woman in her thirties who made headlines following a journalistic investigation by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette and the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), which revealed that she allegedly posed as a member of the Rothschild family — a wealthy European dynasty — in order to get closer to Donald Trump’s entourage.
However, she denied the spying allegations against her and said that Valeriy Tarasenko wanted to pass her off as a Russian spy. Mr. Tarasenko had previously hired Ms. Yashchyshy to look after his minor daughter. The latter then accused him of having been very aggressive towards her.
