A large survey on the difficulties of local elected officials in the exercise of their mandate was sent on Monday September 18 to mayors, franceinfo learned from the Association of Mayors of France (AMF). Aiming to curb the resignations of local elected officials, mayors have one month to respond to this questionnaire, carried out by the AMF, in partnership with the Sciences Po research center, Cevipof.
The first results are expected at the end of October, said the AMF. The themes covered in the questionnaire are numerous, including the conditions for exercising mandates and the violence suffered by elected officials. Compensation for elected officials, the status of local elected officials, their social protection and even the simplification of procedures for mayors of small towns are at the center of the investigation. Individual interviews with around forty mayors will also be conducted by the director of Cevipof, Martial Foucault.
According to a Senate report published in July, 1,078 mayors elected in 2020, out of approximately 35,000, resigned mid-term. This trend is accelerating, the senators warn in their report.
