After suffering numerous thefts, a supermarket manager took a drastic step: displaying photos of the suspected thieves on his storefront. An illegal decision that divides its clientele.
On the window of his supermarket, Eric posted photos of a dozen people he says he caught stealing. “These people came several times, at least three times, and stole very expensive wines from us. We decided to post as soon as we are certain to have videos that prove that these people stole“, he explains, videos in support. In the images, an alleged thief takes three bottles of wine which he puts in his accomplice’s bag. With padlocked windows and around thirty cameras installed, Eric invested in the security of his store, after several complaints remained unanswered.
His initiative to display the photos of the thieves divides the customers. “I think it’s good to identify thieves, but not necessarily to display them”said one of them. “If they don’t have ethics, there’s no reason for the store to have any towards them, so I think it’s a good thing if it can have a deterrent effect”, says another. The attack on image rights and the presumption of innocence nevertheless prohibits this posting, but the manager justifies himself, explaining that he has filed a complaint and “that nothing ever happens”. He claims the thieves have never returned since he posted the photos.
