Protecting the high seas and fighting against the invasion of plastic was the will of the One Ocean Summit. Leslie Cadiou, journalist at France Télévisions, gives an update on the progress of this summit.
The first commitment that has been made is to create an international coalition for a treaty to protect the high seas in 2022. “The high seas are international waters and this represents almost half of the globe”, says Leslie Cadiou. Another commitment is that of 14 countries which undertake to strengthen the fight against illegal fishing. Finally, 22 shipowners are joining the new Green Marine Europe label. “It is a label that involves acting very concretely on very specific points to keep this label such as underwater noise, polluting atmospheric emissions or even the recycling of ships”adds the journalist to France Télévisions.
The countries present at the One Ocean Summit want to fight against plastic pollution and for this the European banks will invest four billion euros by 2025 to fight against this scourge. As a reminder, nine million tonnes of plastic are dumped into the oceans each year. To better protect the oceans, we must know them better, UNESCO is committed to mapping 80% of the seabed by 2030.
