A confused speech. The President of the United States, Joe Biden, seeking a second term, was interrupted several times on Tuesday, January 23, by demonstrators who shouted their solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza. “It’s going to last a while. They have everything planned,” reacted the 81-year-old Democrat. He stopped speaking several times, while his supporters in the audience chanted “Four more years!” Or “Come on Joe !” in order to drown out the voices of the demonstrators.

This demonstration takes place in the middle of the conflict between Israel and Hamas. The war was sparked by Hamas’ unprecedented October 7 attack on Israeli soil. In return, Israel swore “to annihilate” Hamas, in power in Gaza since 2007, and launched a vast military operation in the Gaza Strip. “Protesters call him ‘Genocide Joe’ and call for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas”, reported American journalists on site. One of them added that several of them were evacuated.

The outgoing president gave a campaign speech dedicated to the right to abortion. Before the demonstrators intervened, he accused his rival Donald Trump and the Republicans of wanting “at all costs” further restrict access to voluntary terminations of pregnancy in the United States.
