The historic building of the former Copenhagen Stock Exchange, dating from the 17th century, is on fire and its emblematic 54-meter spire collapsed in the blaze, Danish media reported on Tuesday April 16. “One of Copenhagen’s iconic monuments is engulfed in flames”writes in particular the Copenhagen Post.

Emergency services are on site, and fire trucks surround the building that now houses the Danish Chamber of Commerce, near Parliament. Several witnesses shared images of the incident on social media.

“We are facing a terrible spectacle”reacted the Danish Chamber of Commerce Dansk Erhverv. “The Stock Exchange is on fire. Everyone is asked to stay away from the area around Slotsholmen [quartier où se situe l’édifice]. The firefighters are on site.”.

Commissioned by King Christian IV, the Copenhagen Stock Exchange was built between 1619 and 1640, making it one of the oldest buildings in the city. It had undergone renovation work in recent weeks, and was surrounded by scaffolding.
