“A Soundtrack for Strange Times,” Horror Inc.

Marc Leclerc (Akufen) is an icon of the Quebec electronic scene, a status achieved thanks to the album My Way (2002), a minimalist microhouse house monument that put Montreal talent on the map. Here he is again this time with his Horror Inc. project and an album of around a hundred minutes during which the influence of jazz is even better embedded in the musician’s work. As on the last Horror Inc. (Briefly Eternal2013), the sound of the piano is a privileged ingredient in the construction of these 14 compositions — the percussive dimension of the instrument being magnificently exploited over the long and volatile The Soul (The Essence of Breath). The master of groove house also prefers authentic drum sounds to that of drum machines; the brushed cymbals and jogging bass line evoke swing jazz on Wandering Souls of Griffintownamong other pearls of this album imagining a futuristic vision of music for big bands. Available in vinyl box set. The digital edition will appear in early 2024.
