A Ukrainian soldier was killed in clashes on the front line with pro-Russian separatists, the army announced Thursday, December 2, at the height of tensions with Moscow. This death brings to 61 the number of Ukrainian soldiers killed since the beginning of the year in the east of the country, where the conflict has claimed 13,000 lives since 2014. The separatists have reported the loss of some 40 their fighters since the beginning of the year.

The soldier was killed on Wednesday, said the army press service, which added that it had lost six soldiers in the area in November. The Ukrainian army in a statement accused the separatists of firing at its positions with grenade launcher and large-caliber machine guns. Ukraine says it fears an imminent invasion and accuses it of having massed troops on the border. Moscow, for its part, denies any bellicose tendency and affirms that Kiev constitutes a “threatens” for it and NATO to want to extend to its borders.
