A snowy Saturday for the end of the break

The month of March begins with snow: up to 20 centimeters are expected in southern Quebec on Saturday, to the delight of sliding sports enthusiasts and the despair of motorists.

A new snowfall should fall on the south of the province from Friday night to Saturday. About 15 centimeters of snow are expected in Montreal. The precipitation is expected to intensify towards the south of the province, at the border with the United States, where up to 20 centimeters of snow are expected.

A snow alert is in effect for the regions of Estrie, Gatineau, Montreal, Laval, the Richelieu Valley, Saint-Hyacinthe and Vaudreuil-Soulanges.

Gusts of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour could complicate road conditions at times, warns Guillaume Perron, meteorologist for Environment Canada.

The intensity of precipitation is expected to weaken during the day on Saturday.

The snow in March is not abnormal, underlines the meteorologist. Temperatures in the coming weeks are expected to hover around freezing. “We could still have snow,” he observes. Winter is not over! »

A snowy winter

“The meteorological winter”, that is the months of December, January and February, was particularly snowy in certain regions of Quebec this year, indicates Mr. Perron.

In Montreal, 200 centimeters of snow fell during these three months, while the average is 140 centimeters.

In terms of temperatures, the month of February seems to have remained within seasonal norms, after abnormally mild months of December and January, says the meteorologist.
