In Alabama, in the United States, a man sentenced to death for the murder of a woman was executed by nitrogen inhalation, a world first. The UN and the European Union denounced a cruel death and torture. The man took 29 minutes before succumbing.
In an Alabama prison, an execution with nitrogen. It was on the night of Thursday January 25 to Friday January 26, a man convicted of the death of a pastor’s wife in 1988. He was executed with a controversial new lethal method, unheard of in 40 years in the States -United. The convict did not benefit from any sedation, it is prohibited in Alabama. His execution lasted 29 minutes.
A “disturbing” use according to the White House
Since then, voices have been raised to question this method, that of the European Union but also that of the UN. “This method of suffocation with nitrogen gas could amount to torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment”, said Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. This Friday, January 26, the White House judges “disturbing” lethal use of nitrogen. Several American states had already considered adopting it.
