Patience and determination. In London, the queue to pray in front of the coffin of Queen Elizabeth II reached a length of about seven kilometers on Thursday, September 15, according to a statement shared by the British government. On site, the police closely supervise this popular tribute, and have decided to establish a maximum length for the queue.
To better inform people wishing to join the slow procession to the Palace of Westminster, where the coffin of the Queen is exposed, the British authorities give in real time the length of the queue on the YouTube page of the Department of Culture. To avoid any overflow, and limit the number of disappointed, the British authorities have decided to limit the length of the queue to 16 kilometers.
“Stewards will be present throughout the course”specifies the Department of Culture, which evokes difficult waiting conditions. “You will have to stand for long hours, possibly overnight. Sitting down is almost impossible as the tail is always in motion”continues the official guide of the event (guide in English).
Draconian safety instructions also surround this popular tribute: only small bags are authorized, and the public must submit to checks “like in airports”. Queen Elizabeth’s coffin will still be on display at the Palace of Westminster until early Monday morning, September 19, before being transferred for the official funeral which will take place the same day.
