In the United Kingdom, 800 postal workers wrongly accused of fraud were rehabilitated thanks to the broadcast of a television series.

The scandal shook Britain. 800 post office managers were rehabilitated after being wrongly accused of fraud between 1999 and 2015. 236 of them were even imprisoned. But the resounding success of the series Mr Bates vs The Post Office helped attract the attention of the British government, which looked into their plight.

A massive miscarriage of justice

The victims of this miscarriage of justice were accused of having helped themselves to the cash register at their post office. The real culprit ultimately was faulty Japanese software. Some, like Rubbina Shaheen, served prison sentences and lost everything. However, hundreds of postal workers had been fighting for many years to have the IT failure recognized. The excitement caused by the drama series, broadcast in January 2024 on television, immediately caused the government to react. The accused will be exonerated and compensated.
