Beaten on July 5 in the town of Vieux-Condé (North), Philippe Mathot succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday July 11. The person responsible for the fatal blows was placed in pre-trial detention, and two other young people were indicted.
Philippe Mathot, the former florist of Vieux Condé (North), was very popular. The announcement of his death at the age of 72, Tuesday July 11, was a shock in his town, where a register of condolences has just been installed. On July 5, after 11:30 p.m., Philippe Mathot left his home to ask three young people aged 14 to 18 to make less noise. One of the boys hit him hard, punching and kicking him. His attackers then fled, leaving the pensioner unconscious on the ground.
“Inexcusable, intolerable”
“Violence like that is inexcusable, intolerable”, laments a resident. The perpetrators were arrested the next day and have just been indicted. The 17-year-old man responsible for the fatal blows was remanded in custody. “The three indicted have no criminal record. The minors aged 14 and 17 are in school, and the 18-year-old young man would have interrupted his schooling in first class”said the prosecutor of Valenciennes (North).
