A second whale sighted in Montreal

A second whale has been seen in Montreal, confirms the Group for Research and Education on Marine Mammals (GREMM). A first whale was seen for the first time last weekend in the Old Port area.

These two mammals are more than 450 km from the St. Lawrence estuary, which they usually frequent, said Robert Michaud, director general of the GREMM, on Monday.

“It happens that animals like whales or rorquals make a series of navigation errors and find themselves far from their natural habitat. Is it because he chased schools of fish? Is he sick? We do not know,” explained Mr. Michaud in an interview with 24 hours, adding that, without being frequent, the phenomenon is observed occasionally.

In May 2020, a humpback whale had spent a few days in the same area, before being found dead east of Montreal.
