A second case of avian flu was identified by health authorities in a poultry farm in Finistère, France Bleu Breizh Izel learned from the prefecture on Wednesday October 2. An epidemiological investigation is opened to find the origin of the contamination.

Almost a month after the identification of a first outbreak of avian influenza in Hanvec, health authorities have identified a second pathogenic outbreak in Finistère, this time in the north of the department. In its press release, the Finistère prefecture does not give precise information on the breeding concerned, where the “depopulation is underway.”

The health authorities have implemented a “protection zone” within a radius of three kilometers around “the contaminated establishment”. This area includes the municipalities of Taulé, Locquénolé, Carantec, Henvic and Morlaix to the west of the GR34. A “surveillance zone” was also implemented within a 10 km radius around the pathogenic source.

This is the fourth outbreak of avian flu identified by the French authorities, according to the Finistère prefecture. It is located “in continuation of the confirmed cases in wildlife observed along the Breton coast this summer”adds the prefecture. The first cases of avian influenza recorded on French farms this year have been identified “in Ille-et-Vilaine and Morbihan in August”before a third case on September 4 in Hanvec, in Finistère.
