In the Var, in Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer, a turtle has settled down to lay its eggs in the sand. It is a protected species: the Loggerhead turtle.

It is an unexpected appearance. A sea turtle, moving on a beach in Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer (Var), was filmed on the night of Sunday July 16 to Monday July 17, by a swimmer. The animal came out of the water to lay eggs. Since this morning, a security perimeter protects the nest, buried under the sand. The rare event surprised swimmers. “We don’t know why she came here”says a woman.

A protected species

The Loggerhead turtle is a protected species. Since the morning, several associations follow one another to observe the extraordinary phenomenon. “We came to make sure that there was protection at night, that we could do rounds”, entrusts the member of one of them. Since the beginning of July, egg-laying has multiplied on the beaches of the south of France. Originally from Greece and Turkey, these turtles are getting closer and closer to the French coast, in particular due to global warming.
