“It is a scandalous decision which clearly shows the imposture of Gabriel Attal”reacted Thursday February 22 on franceinfo Sophie Vénétitay, general secretary of the National Union of Secondary School Teachers (Snes-FSU), while the French government recorded savings of ten billion euros on Thursday, including nearly 700 million euros for National Education.

The Prime Minister “had promised, hand on heart, with tremors in his voice, that he would take National Education to Matignon”, recalls Sophie Vénétitay. “Obviously, he mainly took away the budget.” The Ministry of National Education, with nearly 700 million euros less, finds itself “one of the biggest contributors to the appropriations plan for the next budget”.

Sophie Vénétitay alerts on “the very concrete consequences in a National Education which already lacks everything”. “National education is collapsing and we are still asking it to make savings”, denounces the representative of Snes-FSU. She sees there “the confirmation that there is no longer really a pilot on the plane on the National Education side, or that the pilot is on the Bercy side” and judges that “National education is not a priority for this government”.

“Champion of Broken Promises”

The Ministry of National Education indicated that the 700 million less only represents a drop of around 1% in its budget and ensures that there will be no impact on recruitment and the reforms undertaken. But Sophie Vénétitay “finds it hard to believe the ministry”. “We had no guarantee. We discovered this announcement this morning through the decrees that were published.” She denounces “a ministry which is the champion of broken promises”. The Snes-FSU recalls that the ministry “promised that we would have a teacher in front of each class at the start of the school year” and notes that“there was not a teacher in front of each class at the start of the school year”. Sophie Vénétitay points “the reality of the numbers” who is “obvious”. “National education will be affected by austerity which will be reflected in a very concrete way in middle and high schools”.
