A torrent of mud poured into several communes in the Somme after a 20-minute deluge on Tuesday May 21. The department was only on yellow alert but it was difficult to predict such a violent phenomenon.

Tuesday, May 21, a man saw the road that passes in front of his house turn into a torrent, a mixture of water and mud that carries away everything in its path. The violent current surprised all the inhabitants of a small village in the Somme. A motorist, for example, had to back up at full speed to avoid the worst. Others had to cross the river of mud, even fire trucks had difficulty getting around.

There were no injuries but outside, it was chaos. The water tore up and threw the bitumen against the cars. Around ten houses were flooded. In the early morning, the water drained away, leaving only rubble and mud. The inhabitants discover their town disfigured. The “mud river” is a violent and rapid phenomenon. The cause: the storm which hit the department. Within minutes, torrential rain poured into the fields, creating a river of mud. In total, five villages were affected, all residents are worried because new storms are forecast.
