At 71, a retired doctor has returned to service in a mountain village in Ardèche. The doctor continues to practice out of passion, but also to meet the needs of increasingly elderly and isolated residents.
In Saint-Cirgues-en-Montagne (Ardèche), 217 inhabitants, we have been waiting for it for a long time. “It’s a chance to have found it”, said a resident. For a year and a half, Doctor Jean Crochet has been the new doctor. At 71, the former surgeon has returned to service. “It’s a personal aspiration, it’s because we are from a generation where doctors stopped when they could no longer”says Dr. Jean Crochet, general practitioner.
7 out of 10 inhabitants are over 60 years old
The patients, in any case, thank him. “Me, my father is 96 years old, my mother, 87 years old. We simply need them”, says a patient. The village did everything to attract him and facilitate his installation. The doctor works three days a week, is employed by the town hall and therefore has no paperwork to manage. A health center is due to open soon and the municipality is calling for the recruitment of other doctors. 7 out of 10 inhabitants are over 60, so the need for doctors is urgent.
