In Cantal, customers can come and have lunch in a restaurant without a server. Here, homemade dishes can be reheated in the microwave at any time.

In Massiac (Cantal), a restaurant operates… without a waiter. The establishment has “gourmet lockers”, accessible 24 hours a day, which house nine different dishes. The customer places an order with a machine, which automatically opens the corresponding locker. Customers can then reheat their meal in the microwaves provided. “I think it’s great, plus it’s not too expensive”rejoices a man.

A lack of staff

The dishes, which cost between 9 euros and 15 euros, are cooked on site by a chef. “We favor the short circuit”, explains Marvin Lassalas, production manager, VillageFani. The idea was born in 2021 in the mind of Christine Boyer Hajfani, founder of H-24 Repas du terroir, who bought the hotel adjoining the restaurant. “The first problem is the lack of staff”, she explains. This catering concept, unique in France, could be developed in rural areas.
