Numerous preventive arrests during demonstrations against the pension reform: this is what emerges from a recent report by the Comptroller General of Prisons. 80% of the demonstrators arrested on March 23 were released without prosecution. The Paris police headquarters denies any accusation of abusive arrest.
According to a report that has just been published, March 23, the day of demonstration against the pension reform in Paris, is one of the most questionable days from the point of view of arrests. That day, 127 people were arrested and taken into custody. A young girl who was part of it did not know the reason for her arrest. After 23 hours in police custody, she was finally released without charge, like 83% of cases.
The Paris police headquarters denies the charges
The controller general of places of deprivation of liberty, Dominique Simonnot, denounces in her report violations of fundamental rights. “It is illegal to take into custody people against whom there is no suspicion”, she recalls. Laurent Nuñez, Paris police chief, says he is aware of the problem but refutes the principle of arbitrary arrest. The lawyers of a hundred people filed a complaint for deprivation of liberty and violation of the freedom to demonstrate.
