On the weekend of March 25, restaurant owners and their employees survived a tornado in Mississippi, USA, by hiding in the establishment’s gigantic cold room.
When the tornado hit the town of Rolling Fork in Mississippi (USA)during the weekend of March 25, the inhabitants had only a few minutes to take shelter. For restaurant workers, salvation came from a huge refrigerator. “This fridge saved the lives of nine people. If God hadn’t warned us of a tornado, we would all have died in the restaurant that was right here”testifies a survivor.
“It’s as if we were thrown in all directions”
It only takes a few seconds for customers to realize what is about to befall them. The owner then has a reflex: push everyone inside the cold room. “We were in the fridge. It was like we were being thrown all over the place. Everyone was on top of each other. We were trying to hold on to the shelves on the walls. (…) We cried, cried and also prayed. Suddenly everything stopped”, says Tracy Harden, owner of Chuck’s Dairy Bar. The nine people in the cold room survived. Other residents were not so lucky. In Rolling Fork alone, 13 people lost their lives.
