Crop insurance reform begins Wednesday 1st December to help farmers. Many of them hope that it will take better account of climatic hazards.
Increasingly frequent episodes of frost, hail or even heat waves, and many farmers without compensation. The government is launching the crop insurance reform on Wednesday December 1. The objective: to take better account of the risks linked to climate change and to create a universal compensation scheme. Only 18% of farms are insured against climatic hazards.
“Right now crop insurance is expensive and not very attractive. In view of agricultural prices in recent years, it is difficult to recoup such insurance costs.”, explains Philippe Goy, uninsured arborist whose farm was severely hit by frost in April. Weakened, farmers expect a lot from this new reform. “Today, the agricultural profession cannot cope with climate change on its own. This reform, if successful, will be welcome “, comments Philippe Goy.
