Around a hundred people gathered on Sunday April 14 at the end of the afternoon in front of the town hall of Avallon (Yonne), in support of the mayor of the town Jamilah Habsaoui who was placed in pre-trial detention on Wednesday evening for suspicion of drug trafficking, as well as four other people including his two brothers, reports France Bleu Auxerre. Between 140 and 150 people were present, according to gendarmerie figures, including certain members of the municipal team as well as Jamilah Habsaoui’s companion.

At least 70 kg of cannabis resin were discovered last Sunday at the mayor’s home. During the searches, in addition to cannabis resin, around a kilo of cocaine, two gold bars and as well as 7,000 euros in cash were found by the police.

In addition to the mayor of Avallon, two of her brothers are also concerned. Contacted by franceinfo, their lawyers indicate that the two suspects tried to clear their sister. One of them explained that the money, drugs and ingots found by the gendarmes were hidden without Jamilah Habsaoui’s knowledge in this pavilion in Avallon where she does not reside all year round, but she is the owner.

Both men are known to the courts for drug offenses. They are suspected of using the elected official’s home to store the merchandise. The investigation will have to determine whether the mayor was aware.

Jamilah Habsaoui, 46, former member of the PS, is also delegated regional advisor in charge of rurality for Burgundy-Franche-Comté, member of the majority supporting socialist president Marie-Guite Dufay.
