A Quebec woman who returned in October from a camp in Syria released on bail

(Montreal) A 27-year-old Quebecer who was charged with terrorism on her return from a detention camp in northeastern Syria last October was released on bail on Friday.

Details of Oumaima Chouay’s bail hearing or the reasons for her release by a judge of the Court of Quebec are subject to a publication ban.

Mme Chouay is charged with leaving Canada to participate in the activities of a terrorist group, participation in terrorist activities, providing goods or services for terrorist purposes, and conspiracy to leave Canada in order to participate in the activities of a terrorist group.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) arrested her in October at Montreal International Airport, upon her arrival from a camp for detainees of the Islamic State (Daesh) group in Syria, with her two children and another adult.

Mme Chouay was released on Friday on the condition that she wear a tracking bracelet, refrain from using any form of social media and report to police once a month. A family member must also post a bond of $5,000 to ensure their future presence in court.

The RCMP says that Ms.me Chouay had been under investigation by the Integrated National Security Team since November 2014.
