A psychiatric examination ordered for Pierre Ny St-Amand, who ran into a Laval daycare center

The man accused of crashing into a daycare center with a city bus, killing two children, will have to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine if he is fit to stand trial.

A magistrate ordered it Friday morning at the Laval courthouse, after his lawyer requested it.

The latter indicated to the judge of the Court of Quebec that the attitude of Pierre Ny St-Amand changes from one day to another and that he is sometimes unable to communicate with him. He reported that a psychiatrist had also seen him and expressed doubts about his mental fitness.

The accused, present in the courtroom, did not breathe a word.

The 51-year-old man is accused of having killed two children and injured six others by smashing a daycare center in the Sainte-Rose district, in Laval, sowing consternation.

He was arrested on the spot and appeared the same day. He faces nine counts, including two of first degree murder.

More details will follow.
