Ebrahim Raïssi, one of the most conservative presidents of Iran who did not hesitate to repress demonstrators, died this Monday, May 20. But a priori, his death will not lead to a change in policy.

Ebrahim Raïssi, the Iranian president, died in a helicopter crash on Monday May 20. However, he had more of an executive role and took care of current Iranian affairs, the real master of the country being Ayatollah Ali Khomenei, since 1989. The Supreme Guide of the Iranian Islamic Republic is also the head of the armies. According to the Constitution, Vice-President Mohammad Mokhbér should act as interim president. He will rule Iran for 50 days before new elections are held.

Over the coming weeks, candidacies for the presidential election will have to receive the approval of the Supreme Guide, a Select Council, and the Revolutionary Guards. Liberals and reformers should be sidelined in favor of the toughest candidates, according to David Rigoulet-Roze, Iran expert and associate researcher at IRIS: “All instances of power are today controlled by the ultras, whether it is the ultra-conservatives, of which Ebrahim Raïssi was a political incarnation, or whether it is the ultra-radicals who were very critical of President Raïssi for his economic incompetence. .”
